To find the origins of the viper, one must look back to the 1950's and 1960's. the vipers roots originate from the Cunningham Coupes of the 50's, and the Shelby American Cobra Daytona Coupes from 1965. the general design of the shelby is evident in the RT/10's, but it mostly inpired the creation of the Viper GTS.
the original Viper debuted at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in 1989, as a concept car. The concept viper, which can be seen on the home page, is rather different from the actual production viper. it has a wildly exagerated rear end, and giant air vents at the side of the hood. Both of these elements are found on the production cars, but not to this extreme. The original drawing lead to something more realistic, more drivable, and more appealing to me. The actual first viper car, the one at NAIAS in 1989, very closely resembled the production models of the early to mid 1990's. The main difference being the rear role bar, the wind shield, wheels, and some minor body panel changes.
The Viper was the fastest concept to production car in the history of Dodge. In just three short years, it hit the road, and what a success it was and still is! For a company known for mini-vans and family sedans, the Viper was a shock! With its stunning looks, and stunning performance, it was anything but the "normal" Dodge! Corvettes now had a run for their money, some good old American competition.
Then when people thought the viper was too much, along came tuner, John Hennessey. If you thought the stock one had too much hp, just dont tell him because this man is responsible for the fastest Vipers on the planet, and the all new Venom 800TT (with "only" 833hp) is the fastest new car in the world! It has an incredible 0-60mph time of a mere 2.4 seconds! And an all out top speed run is next for this car, because who knows exactly how fast 833 street legal horses can go?
